HISTORY 

 1835

CHOSEN FRIENDS LODGE #2              "THE FIRST YEAR"

Louisville March 16, 1835 

At a meeting of the petitions for a charter for the establishment of a lodge of odd fellows in this city to be called Chosen Friends Lodge # 2 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The following petition was presented to AW R. Harris, Jason Lyman, Harry Barter, Charles Wolford and GS Lyon. Order which the above had sometime application for having this day come to hand having been sent to us by the Grand Lodge of the United States in the care of brother PL Miller and being now for the first time met pursuance of the power there in conferred and granted by WR Harris was called to the chair and GS Lyon appointed secretary.

A communication from boom lodge was received by this meeting from this committee who had waited upon us for that purpose and as followed at a meeting of Boone lodge No. 1 held at this hall on Monday night on motion of PJ Wolford resolved that the officers and brothers of chosen friends lodge No. 2of Louisville KY bye be allowed the use of the hall of Boone lodge free of expense for the present quarter of Boone Lodge they paying for their own lights and the fees of the hall any night not occupied by Boone lodge resolved that the Noble Grand (NG)appoint Jay Hawkins A. Wolford and William hand to wait upon the chosen friends No. 2with the above resolution.

Resolved the resolutions from Boone lodge be accepted spread upon the minutes of this meeting and the thanks of the chosen friends be and are surely tendered to Boone lodge through their commitment for their kindness to us on the present occasion.

Resolved that we now go into a nomination for officers for chosen friends Lodge # 2 for the first quarter also that election be held for said officers. On ballot the following brothers were duly elected Harry Barker Noble Grand (NG)Cedric Wolford Vice Grand (VG)Sidney S Lyon secretary and A.W.R. Harris treasurer resolved that a committee be appointed to procure stationary for the use of chosen friends large number 2 resolved that this lodge adopt for their use and regulation thereof the bylaws of Boone lodge and the rules of order now in use by said lodge for the time being resolved that this lodge adjourned to meet at the hall of Boone lodge on tomorrow evening at 7:00 o'clock.

The petitions of William Anderson aged 45 years occupation grocer residence on the corner of green and 1st streets was received recommended by AWRHarris appointed as committee on this petition we're brothers Hiram McGehee, Jason Lyman and brother Wolford. The petition for Thomas Owens aged 25 years occupation House Joiner residence at Mr. Jonathan Reinhards, 2 miles east of Louisville was received recommended by William Irwin the committee appointed were brothers Charles Land, Hiram McGehee and Martin B Geiger? The petition of Robert Veitch aged 39 years occupation merchant tailor residence Market Street between 4th and 5th streets received by Charles Wolford and AWR Harris was received in appointed on committee where brothers Jason Lyman, Sidney Lyon and Martin B Geiger.

Louisville April 14, 1835 

To the Noble Grand (NG)and Vice Grand (VG)officers and brothers of chosen friends lodge No2 brothers I am authorized by Boone lodge to inform you that Mr Robert story and Mr Ambrose Tomlinson made application to become members of Boone lodge and on ballot they were severely rejected.

meeting opened with brother Stephen Barclay from Boone Lodge.

William Anderson was accepted as an honorary member.

The proposition Mr Wm N Merriweather aged 38 years, profession physician, his residence on 5th between market and Jefferson streets.

Initiations Mrs Robert Veitch, Thomas Carroll, William Merriweather and Michael Ziegler being in waiting were introduced and initiated in due form.

Louisville April 28, 1835

The proposition of S pilcher aged 30 years profession lawyer residents on 5th St between chestnut and Broadway.

Louisville Tuesday May 5th, 1835

the proposition of Jonathan B Heafor age 37 years, occupation coffee house, his residence is on Market Street between 4th and 5th streets.

Tuesday May 12th, 1835

The petition of James Johnston aged 24 years occupation bricklayer his residence on 4th St between Jefferson and green streets.

The petition of Prentice long age 23 years occupation Taylor his residence is on 3rd St between Jefferson and market streets.

The petition of Nathaniel Stout age 29 years occupation plow maker his residence on 4th St between market and Jefferson streets.


Louisville May 19, 1835

The committee on the petitions of James speed, end Prentice Lang and Nathaniel stout reported favorably.

The proposition of Jonathan Thomas age 35 years occupation exchange broker his residence on Market Street by 2nd St Louisville KY.

The partition of Samuel W Atley aged 29 years his occupation is Carpenter his residence is on 2nd street between market and Jefferson streets

the proposition of Mr Joseph a Oliver aged 22 years occupation Carpenter his residence on chestnut St between 6th and 7th streets.

Louisville June 2nd, 1835

 the petition for Samuel W Atley was withdrawn

There is mention of a brother George W Dobbs of #24-Star lodge Petersburg applied to visit not having his card. Our motion resolved the rule regarding cards be dispensed with in the case of brother jobs brother Dobbs was admitted

Louisville June 9, 1835

The minutes of the previous meeting red and adopted resolved the rule regarding cards from visitors be dispensed with in the case of brother George D Gallow of New Orleans lodge No. 2of Louisiana brother Gallow was admitted.

The committee on the petition of Mr. James Johnston accepted favorably and was discharge 

June 7, 1835

It being the 13th night of the regular meeting of this lodge an election was held for the various offices on ballot Charles Wolford was elected Noble Grand (NG), brother Sydney Lyon Noble Grand (NG) W Woolford secretary and Jason Lyman treasurer.

The petition of Jason L Wilson age 29 years residing at S.B. Roby, occupation riverman or Steamboat officer.

The proposition of Charles E muzzy aged 29 years reputation comedian his residence is on Jefferson St right after the theater.

Second quarter Louisville June 16th, 1835 

The officers elect having retired they were introduced and regularly installed into their respective chairs Charles Wolford Noble Grand (NG) Sydney Lyon Vice Grand (VG) William Wolford secretary James Tyman(Lyman) and treasurer.

The NG then appointed brother William H Walker right hand guard, Hiram McGehe left hand guard, William Ttilcher conductor Henry McGee warden and Jacob Bromwell inside guardian the Vice Grand (VG)appointed brother JB Heafer  right hand guard Vice Grand (VG)brother P long left hand guard vice grand, brothers Oliver and stout were appointed inside supporters all the above officers have been taken their seat the several chargers were read to them by past grand Harry barker.

Louisville June 23rd, 1835

Proposition of Francis B Simons to become a member was received his age is 23 years occupation barkeeper his residences on 4th street near Main St in Louisville

 proposition for membership of Mr Douglas Brown age 21 years occupation matchmaker his residence on main street between 3rd and 4th streets

Also a proposition of Mr Joseph Oliver aged 21 years occupation clerk his residence 63 between green and walnut streets Louisville

Francis B Simmons, Douglas Joseph brown, Joseph Oliver reported favorable.

Louisville July 14, 1835

the Noble Grand (NG)having resigned his chair to his right guard stated to the lodge some information he had received relative to the character in standing of Mr Samuel Wallace, who has been balloted for and elected on the last lodge night and moved a reconsideration of said ballot, which motion was seconded and carried. It was then moved and carried that the ballot be again taken at the proposition of Mr Samuel Wallace which was accordingly done, and he was declared rejected there being one white ball

Louisville July 21, 1835

article one of the bylaws each member shall wear while in the lodge a rosette indicative of the number of degrees he has taken, under the penalty of $0.25 for each night in it shall be the duty of the warden to report all failures provided that members be allowed two weeks to procure rosettes.

August 18, 1835

the committee on the proposition of rich S Davis to become a member reported favorable.

The proposition of Mr Hiram Reaugh to become a member was read.

August 25, 1835

proposition of a H. Andrews and proposition of L.W Morgan to become a member we're read.

It being the proper time for nominations for officers for the ensuing quarter brother Vice Grand (VG) Sydney Lyon was nominated for Noble Grand (NG) which nomination the brother declined a motion further nomination for Noble Grand (NG)was postponed until next meeting. For Vice Grand, William Wolford and Mr Irwin for secretary AWR Harris treasurer JB Heafer and Jason Lyman. 

Tuesday September 1st, 1835

Louisville KY the committee on the application of Mr AH Andrews reported his death since their appointment and were discharged the fee of $5 received with his application ordered to be returned. Proposition of John C Davis to become a member was read.

September 8, 1835

There is a mention of a brother Huston Clark of Washington lodge #2 in Pennsylvania as a visitor two chosen friends lodge #2.

The proposition of HB Nestbay reported favorable and that the application be allowed to withdraw his petition on motion so much of the report as related to the withdrawal of the petition once rejected a ballot was then had and the applicant was rejected Jonathan C Davis and HB net pay fees ordered to be returned.

A ballot was Then had on the application of brother S. Lee of Washington Lodge # 2 of Ohio to become a member of this lodge his card having laid over the regular term he was declared duly elected. The regular election was then held in the following brothers were chosen for the ensuing quarter Charles Wolford Noble Grand (NG)William Irwin Vice Grand (VG) AWR Harris secretary and JB Heafer treasurer. the Noble Grand (NG) appointed brothers S Pilcher, BJ Harrison and James Johnston Finance Committee Douglas brown warden SM Lee conductor, W H pilcher right hand guard Noble Grand (NG), Ben Harrison left hand guard Noble Grand (NG), MB Geiger and NH stout appointed supporters of the vice grand.

September 15, 1835

The committee on the application of Mr Alonzo F Clarke They report which was favorable the committee on the application of Mr Andrew Beer made a similar report.

October 13, 1835

the proposition of Mr Jason McDaniel was read.

This being the first night of nominations the following brothers were nominated viz brother William Irwin for Noble Grand (NG), W Wolford and AWR Harris for Vice Grand (VG), NB Geiger and W Pilcher for Secretary Jason Johnston and Jonathan Irwin for treasurer.

October 20, 1835

On motion the ballot was taken on the application of Mr J McDaniel and he was declared duly elected And being and waiting was duly prepared introduced and initiated into the solemn rites in mysteries of odd fellowship. The proposition of Mr Jacob Mitchell was read and ordered to lie over the usual. And brothers AJ Clark, S Lyon and John Thomas appointed investigating committee.

October 26, 1835

there was mention of a committee the visit of the Grand Sire Keyser

November 3rd, 1835

 proposition of Joseph G Norwood was read, age 28 years profession physician his residence is in Madison IN.

November 17, 1835

A visiting card of Charles Gillchant of Franklin lodge #4 Cincinnati OH was read and he was admitted to visit the lodge. Also the card of Samuel Frowsen of Montgomery large #5 Dayton OH was read and it was then stated by PG Charles Wolford that the brother was in a distressed situation and needed assistance and consequences of which brother Jonathan Thomas, W Wolford and Sydney Lyon were appointed a committee of investigation.

Past grand as brother Harrison intended to leave Louisville shortly and wishes to take the 5th degree before his departure it was resolved that the lodge should open for this purpose of conferring degrees.

November 24, 1835

proposition of James manning age 23 years occupation woodturner his residence is between market street and Jefferson streets.

December 8, 1835

cards of brothers Harrison and Sisco of Franklin lodge #2 and brother's Ceraust of William Tell Lodge Baltimore MD were read and after being duly examined were permitted to visit.

Proposition of Thomas Little age 21 years our compassion plane maker his residence between main and market streets on 3rd St.

December 22, 1835

proposition of W. Burrell age 24 years occupation drudgeries his residence on Market Street between 3rd and 4th St.

December 29, 1835

Card of brother J Frantyo Of Ohio Lodge # one was red after he was examined was admitted to visit.
